AI Product Engineer, Visual Media Workflows

About the Role

We are seeking an AI Product Engineer to join our client, a fast-growing AI company building products for visual media workflows in beauty and premium commerce. This role sits at the intersection of product engineering, practical ML, and creative production workflows.

You will work on improving AI-powered creative tools for professional use, focusing on detail preservation, product consistency, editing controls, quality evaluation, and faster improvement from customer feedback. This is a hands-on engineering role working closely with product and customer-facing teams to turn real production feedback into shipped improvements.

Key Responsibilities

• Turn customer and product-quality feedback into concrete improvements for visual media workflows (image and video)
• Build and evaluate AI features for detail preservation, upscaling, retouching, product consistency, lighting control, and professional workflow fit
• Compare and integrate providers, models, parameters, and processing approaches using structured evaluation
• Build production integrations: provider API calls, async job management, error handling, output storage, logging, and cost/latency tracking
• Design and implement data capture systems for workflow events, generated assets, approval/rejection history, QA labels, and usage signals
• Use collected data to improve product decisions, evaluation sets, provider/model choices, and customer-visible quality
• Collaborate across product, design, engineering, QA, and customer-facing teams to ensure AI controls are understandable and useful
• Communicate clearly about changes, improvements, failures, and next testing priorities

Required Qualifications

• Strong Python engineering fundamentals: clear structure, maintainability, error handling, tests, and debugging
• Hands-on experience with practical AI systems, visual media AI, computer vision, or image/video generation and editing
• Ability to evaluate media outputs precisely using concrete language around texture, lighting, consistency, and workflow fit
• Practical understanding of AI feature integration: API calls, async jobs, status tracking, retries, error handling, and logging
• Ability to translate qualitative feedback into hypotheses, evaluation examples, and implementation steps
• Product sense for professional creative workflows and production asset quality
• Clear written and spoken English
• Ability to work primarily from Tokyo office (office-first hybrid model with one remote day per week)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with image/video generation, editing, or upscaling providers and tools (OpenAI media models, Gemini, fal.ai, Replicate, Adobe Firefly, Topaz, Runway, or comparable systems)
• Experience with diffusion models, transformers, CLIP/VLMs, segmentation, image restoration, super-resolution, or multimodal evaluation
• Experience building evaluation datasets, benchmark scripts, annotation workflows, or experiment tracking systems
• Mid-to-senior experience with data engineering or ML engineering that improves product quality through systematic data capture and usage
• Experience in ecommerce, beauty, fashion, photo/video applications, creative tooling, design tools, or asset-heavy production workflows
• Experience with cloud storage, queues, workers, FastAPI, Postgres, Redis, Temporal, or observability tools
• Japanese and/or Chinese communication ability
